Ali, a former Mandera South MP and past chair of the National Assembly’s trade, industry and cooperatives committee, now assumes a leadership role at the helm of EPRA’s board.

President William Ruto has appointed Adan Haji Ali as the new non-executive Chairperson of the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA), replacing George Wanga whose appointment has been revoked.

In a special issue of the Kenya Gazette dated June 16, 2025, Ruto invoked Section 12(1)(a) of the Energy Act, 2019, to appoint Ali for a three-year term, effective immediately.

“The appointment of George Wanga is revoked,” reads Gazette Notice No. 7850. Wanga had been appointed on January 17, 2025.

Ali, a former Mandera South MP and past chair of the National Assembly’s trade, industry and cooperatives committee, now assumes a leadership role at the helm of EPRA’s board.

His responsibilities will include steering corporate governance, strategy, and policy direction to enhance the Authority’s performance and delivery on its legal mandate.

EPRA, established under the Energy Act of 2019, is responsible for regulating Kenya’s energy and petroleum sectors.

It oversees power generation, transmission and supply, petroleum importation and refining, as well as upstream petroleum operations and compliance with petroleum agreements. The Authority also sets and approves tariffs, ensures fair trading practices, and enforces environmental, health, safety and quality standards.

Through its wide-ranging regulatory functions, EPRA plays a key role in shaping the country’s energy future, balancing investor interests, consumer protection, and environmental responsibility.
